Asscher Cut Engagement Rings NZ — Art Deco's Diamond
The Asscher cut is the diamond that the Art Deco era built its finest jewellery around. Its square outline, deeply trimmed octagonal corners, and large parallel step-cut facets created the geometric precision and architectural clarity that defined design in the 1920s and 1930s. Eight decades later, nothing has replaced it for buyers who want a diamond that is simultaneously vintage and modern, deeply sophisticated, and unlike anything else available. The Asscher's concentric square or X-pattern, visible through the table facet like a view through a kaleidoscope, is the most instantly recognisable visual signature of any diamond cut.
At TJ Diamond, every Asscher cut engagement ring is handcrafted in our Auckland studio with particular attention to clarity selection, because step-cut facets reveal inclusions more readily than brilliant cuts, and because the Asscher's large open facets make this consideration especially important.
Joseph Asscher and the Most Famous Cut in Amsterdam — 1902
The Asscher cut was created in 1902 by Joseph Asscher of the Royal Asscher Diamond Company in Amsterdam, one of the most prestigious diamond cutting houses in the world. Joseph Asscher's company had been established in 1854 and by 1902 was considered the finest diamond cutter in Europe. The cut he created that year, a square step-cut with deeply cropped corners and a higher crown than previous square cuts, was unlike anything available in the market and became associated with the finest jewellery of the Edwardian and Art Deco periods.
Joseph Asscher's reputation reached its peak in 1907, when the Dutch royal family entrusted him with the most consequential task in the history of diamond cutting: cleaving the Cullinan diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, at 3,106 carats. Asscher studied the stone for months. When he finally struck it, it cleaved perfectly. The two largest polished stones from the Cullinan are the Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa, both part of the British Crown Jewels. The man who created the Asscher cut was also the only man trusted to cut the world's largest diamond.
Joseph Asscher created his cut in 1902, then in 1907 was entrusted to cleave the Cullinan diamond, the largest rough diamond ever found. The inventor of the Asscher cut was also the greatest diamond cutter of his era.
The X-Pattern and Concentric Squares — What Makes the Asscher Unique
The Asscher cut's most celebrated visual quality is the geometric pattern visible when looking through the table facet from directly above. The large parallel step-cut facets reflect each other in the polished flat surfaces, creating a series of concentric square frames that appear to nest inside each other, receding toward the centre of the stone. Depending on the angle of light, this pattern can appear as square rings or as a bold X-shape radiating from the stone's centre.
This effect is unique to the Asscher and is more pronounced than in the emerald cut, because the square proportions create four equal facet arrangements around a central point, where the rectangular emerald cut produces longer parallel rows without the same convergent geometry. The higher the crown of the Asscher and the deeper its pavilion, the more pronounced the concentric square pattern becomes.
Standard Asscher vs Royal Asscher Cut
Standard Asscher (original, 1902): 58 facets. The original Joseph Asscher design. Produces the classic step-cut reflection with good light performance and a clear concentric square pattern. Most Asscher cut diamonds available in the market are standard Asscher cuts.
Royal Asscher Cut (redesigned, 2001): 74 facets. The Royal Asscher Diamond Company redesigned the cut in 2001, adding 16 facets to the pavilion and elevating the crown further. The additional facets produce a more brilliant light return and a more pronounced X-pattern than the original. The Royal Asscher cut is a patented design. Not all jewellers have access to Royal Asscher certified stones. TJ Diamond can source Royal Asscher cuts on request.
For most buyers, a well-cut standard Asscher delivers the visual qualities the Asscher is known for. The Royal Asscher cut is a premium option for buyers who specifically want the maximum concentric square effect and the most brilliant version of the step-cut square diamond.
Why Clarity Matters More for Asscher Cuts
The Asscher cut's large, parallel step-cut facets act as transparent windows into the interior of the diamond, just as the emerald cut's facets do. In a brilliant cut diamond, the optical complexity of 58 angled facets scatters light in a way that conceals most inclusions from casual observation. In an Asscher cut, the large flat facets offer a clear, direct view into the stone's interior. Inclusions that are effectively invisible in a round brilliant can be clearly visible in an equivalent Asscher cut.
A VS2 clarity grade is recommended as the minimum for an Asscher cut diamond. Ideally VS1 or above for the most transparent and visually clear expression of the Asscher's geometric qualities. Our Auckland jewellers inspect every Asscher diamond through the table facet under magnification before selection, specifically checking whether inclusions are visible in normal viewing conditions.
Asscher vs Emerald Cut — Choosing Between Them
The Asscher and emerald are the two step-cut shapes most commonly compared, and the distinction is clear once understood:
The emerald cut is rectangular, elongating, and linear. Its horizontal axis creates a finger-lengthening effect. The concentric pattern runs in parallel rows along the stone's length. The emerald reads as sophisticated and architectural.
The Asscher cut is square, compact, and radially symmetrical. Its concentric square or X-pattern radiates from the centre outward. The Asscher reads as boldly geometric and deeply vintage. For buyers choosing between them, the question is: rectangular elegance (emerald) or square symmetry (Asscher)? See our emerald cut engagement rings collection for direct comparison.
Settings for Asscher Cut Engagement Rings
-
Four-corner solitaire, solitaire engagement rings: prongs at the trimmed octagonal corners hold the stone cleanly while exposing the full square face. The most classic Asscher setting and the most faithful to the cut's geometric character.
-
Halo, halo engagement rings: a ring of smaller diamonds following the octagonal outline of the Asscher adds significant sparkle and amplifies perceived size. Baguette-cut halo stones create the most Art Deco-coherent combination.
-
Three-stone, three stone engagement rings: an Asscher centre flanked by two smaller Asscher cuts or baguette side stones creates a strongly architectural, period-authentic composition.
-
Bezel: a metal rim encircling the octagonal outline creates the sleekest, most modern Asscher setting. The contrast between the clean metal frame and the complex interior pattern of the Asscher is striking.
Natural and Lab-Grown Asscher Diamonds
Both natural and lab-grown Asscher cut diamonds are available at TJ Diamond, each IGI or GIA certified. The clarity grade recommendation (VS2 minimum) applies equally to both. Lab-grown Asscher diamonds make higher clarity grades accessible at prices that would not reach equivalent natural stones, making the combination of Asscher cut and premium clarity significantly more affordable. Explore our lab-grown diamond collection for the full range within your budget.
