TJ Gold & Diamond designs and manufactures custom engagement rings in our own Auckland factory. We are not a retailer who sends your design to a third party — we complete the alloying, CAD design, casting, stone setting, laser welding and hand finishing ourselves, in one facility. That means you deal directly with the people making your ring, you see it in 3D before any metal is cut, and there is no retail markup between the workshop and you. What "bespoke" actually means here

The word gets used loosely. In New Zealand, most jewellers advertising bespoke rings are designing the piece and then sending it to a manufacturer — often offshore — to be made. That is a legitimate way to work, but it means the person you spoke to has limited control once the file leaves their desk, and every change costs time.

At TJ Gold & Diamond, bespoke means built in the building. Our facility handles:

• Precious metal alloying — we mix our own gold, so we control the colour and the karat
• CAD design and engineering — your ring is modelled in 3D and you approve it before production
• Precision casting, including platinum — platinum casting is technically demanding and most NZ workshops outsource it
• Stone setting — natural and lab-grown diamonds, and coloured gemstones
• Laser welding and hand finishing
• Final quality control

How the process works

1. Consultation. In person at our Auckland studio, or by video call if you are outside Auckland. Bring images, a Pinterest board, a sketch on the back of a receipt — anything. We talk through style, stone, metal, budget and timeframe. Free, and with no obligation to proceed.
2. Stone selection. You choose between certified lab-grown and natural diamonds, or a coloured gemstone. We show you real options in your budget and explain the trade-offs honestly — including where spending more genuinely shows and where it does not.
3. CAD design. We model your ring in 3D so you can see it from every angle before it exists. Revisions happen at this stage, on screen, at no cost. Nothing goes into production until you say yes.
4. Manufacturing. Casting, setting, welding and finishing, all in our Auckland facility.
5. Fitting and collection. We size the ring precisely and check the fit with you. Adjustments are part of the service, not an extra.

What a custom engagement ring costs in New Zealand

Custom engagement rings at TJ Gold & Diamond start from $999 NZD. That buys a plain solitaire — one certified lab-grown diamond in a simple setting, without additional detailing. From there, the final figure depends on four things:

• The stone. Usually the largest part of the cost. Lab-grown diamonds are typically 30–50% less than an equivalent natural diamond, which is the single biggest lever you have on budget.
• The metal. Platinum costs more than 18k gold, which costs more than 14k or 9k. Weight matters too — a wide band uses more metal than a fine one.
• Design complexity. A solitaire takes less labour than a halo with pavé shoulders and hidden detailing.
• Setting work. Every small stone is set by hand. Sixty of them takes sixty times the work of one.

Is custom more expensive than buying a ready-made ring?

Usually not, and often less. This surprises people. A ring in a retail display case carries the cost of the store, the sales floor, the stock sitting unsold, and the manufacturer's margin before the retailer's own. Because we manufacture what we sell, a custom ring skips most of that. You are paying for materials and skilled labour rather than for overhead.

What custom does cost you is time — one to four weeks rather than walking out with it today. If you need a ring this afternoon, buy from a case. If you have a few weeks, custom will usually get you more ring for the same money.

Using your own diamond, or an heirloom

Yes, we do this, and it is some of the most satisfying work we take on. If you have an inherited ring that is not being worn, a diamond from a previous engagement, or a piece that is damaged beyond repair, we can rebuild it into something you will actually wear.

We can reset your existing stones into a new design, melt down and re-use your own gold, or reshape a piece while keeping the elements that carry the meaning. We assess the stones and metal in front of you first and tell you honestly what is worth keeping and what is not.

Lab-grown or natural diamonds — your choice

We work with both, and we do not push either. Both come with independent certification from IGI or GIA.

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds, graded on the same 4Cs, and indistinguishable without specialist equipment. They cost 30–50% less, which usually means a larger or better stone for the same budget. Natural diamonds carry the geological history and the traditional resale expectations that matter to some couples. Neither answer is wrong — it depends on what you value, and we will talk it through rather than steer you.

Plenty of our custom work is for couples outside Auckland and overseas. The process runs by video consultation, with CAD renders sent for approval by email and the finished ring shipped insured. Ring sizing can be handled remotely — we will talk you through how to measure accurately, and resizing is covered.

How long does a custom engagement ring take?

One to four weeks for most pieces, from the moment you approve the CAD design. Highly complex designs or unusual stone sourcing can take longer. If you have a proposal date, tell us at the consultation and we will confirm whether it is achievable before you commit.

Can I see the ring before it is made?

Yes. Every custom ring is modelled in 3D CAD and you approve the render before production begins. Revisions at that stage are free and unlimited within reason. Nothing is cast until you are happy.

Can you use my own diamond or redesign an heirloom ring?

Yes. We reset existing stones, re-use your own gold, and rebuild inherited or damaged pieces into new designs. We assess your stones and metal in front of you and tell you honestly what is worth re-using. This is one of the most common reasons people come to us.

Do you use lab-grown or natural diamonds?

Both, and we have no preference between them. All stones are independently certified by IGI or GIA. What is the difference between custom and bespoke?

In practice the words are used interchangeably in New Zealand. Both mean a ring designed for you rather than bought from existing stock. The more useful question is whether the jeweller actually manufactures it. Many businesses advertising bespoke rings design them in-house and send them elsewhere to be made. We design and manufacture in the same Auckland facility.

Can I have a custom ring made if I do not live in Auckland?

Yes. We work with couples throughout New Zealand and overseas by video consultation, with CAD renders approved by email and the finished ring shipped insured. We will guide you through measuring ring size accurately, and resizing is covered.

Do I need to know what I want before the consultation?

No. Most people arrive with a rough idea or a few saved images and no technical vocabulary at all, which is completely normal. Our job is to translate what you like into something that can be made and worn daily. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.

What if I do not like the finished ring?

Do you make custom wedding bands to match?

Yes. Matching or contoured wedding bands are straightforward for us because we still have the CAD file and the exact profile of your engagement ring. A band designed alongside the original sits flush in a way an off-the-shelf band rarely does.
