Three diamonds. One ring. A story told in stones. The three stone engagement ring — also known as the trilogy ring is the most symbolically explicit piece of jewellery in fine jewellery. Each stone has a name: the two side stones represent the past and the future, and the larger centre stone represents the present moment the commitment being made right now. It is not a new idea. It is an ancient one, and it endures because it captures something that every other ring style leaves unsaid: that love is not just a present feeling but a story with a beginning, a middle, and a long way yet to go.
At TJ Diamond, every three stone engagement ring is handcrafted in our Auckland studio. We work with you on every dimension of the design the centre stone, the side stone shape and proportion, whether to match or contrast the cuts, and which metal brings the three stones together most beautifully. No two three stone rings we make are identical, because no two love stories are.
The Past, Present and Future — Where the Symbolism Comes From
The three stone ring as an engagement ring took cultural hold in the early 2000s, when De Beers launched a campaign specifically around the past, present, and future symbolism. But the design itself is far older three-stone rings appear in jewellery records from the Georgian and Victorian eras, typically with a different interpretation: the three stones representing faith, hope, and love. The trilogy engagement ring as understood today with the past-present-future meaning applied to a couple's relationship is a 21st century story wrapped around a very old design.
More recently, the three stone ring gained a powerful cultural moment through the British royal family. Prince Charles's original engagement ring for Lady Diana Spencer was a sapphire trilogy ring three stones, the sapphire centre flanked by diamond side stones which became one of the most photographed rings in history. Prince William later gave the same ring to Kate Middleton. Though the style differs from a pure diamond three stone ring, the royal association cemented the trilogy's cultural standing as a ring of profound romantic significance.
Past. Present. Future. Three stones, one ring, a complete love story. The three stone engagement ring is the most symbolically explicit piece in fine jewellery.
Stone Size Ratio — The Proportion Decision No Competitor Explains
The ratio between the centre stone and the two side stones is the most important practical decision in designing a three stone ring, and the one most buyers are not given guidance on before they choose. The size relationship between the three stones determines whether the ring reads as balanced, dramatic, or cluttered.
Two proportions work consistently well:
Classic proportion (50/25/25): The centre stone holds approximately 50% of the total diamond weight, with each side stone holding around 25%. Example: 1-carat centre stone with two 0.4-0.5 carat side stones. This creates a clearly dominant centre stone with substantial side stones that frame it respectfully the most balanced and universally flattering three stone proportion.
Dramatic proportion (60/20/20): The centre stone takes 60% or more of the total weight, with slimmer, more delicate side stones at 20% each. Example: 1.5-carat centre with two 0.3-carat sides. The centre stone dominates; the side stones act as architectural support. This suits buyers who want the three stone design but want the focus almost entirely on one main diamond.
Side stones that are too small (below 0.2 carats each) lose visual presence and the ring loses the three-stone character. Side stones approaching the size of the centre stone create competition rather than harmony. Our jewellers will assess proportion with your specific stones during your Auckland consultation.
Same Shape or Mixed Shapes? The Design Choice That Defines the Ring
Three stone rings are available with all three diamonds in the same cut, or with a different shape for the centre stone and side stones. Each approach creates a completely different aesthetic:
Matching shapes — unified and harmonious
-
Three round brilliants — the most classic and widely recognised three stone configuration. Maximum combined sparkle.
-
Three oval diamonds — oval engagement rings in a three stone setting: elongating, romantic, and contemporary. The oval-oval-oval combination has grown strongly in NZ through 2024-25.
-
Three emerald cuts — emerald cut engagement rings: architectural and Art Deco. Three rectangular step-cut stones create a distinctly bold, linear composition.
Complementary shapes — contrast and drama
-
Oval centre + pear side stones — oval engagement rings flanked by
-
Round centre + half-moon side stones — a vintage-inspired configuration. The half-moon shapes (half-round diamonds cut flat along one edge) nest perfectly against a round centre stone, creating a seamless curved composition that reads as one unified design.
-
Emerald centre + trapezoid sides — emerald cut engagement rings with trapezoidal side stones: an Art Deco-inspired combination where the geometric shapes align perfectly. Architecturally precise and deeply sophisticated.
TJ Diamond can craft three stone rings in any shape combination. Mixed-shape rings require the most careful stone selection and proportion work, because the visual weight of different shapes varies significantly even at the same carat weight.
Three Stone Rings Beyond Engagement — The Anniversary Connection
The three stone ring is the only engagement ring style with a naturally built-in meaning for a second occasion. Given on a milestone anniversary 10th, 20th, 25th the past, present, and future symbolism takes on even more weight than it carries at an engagement. The 'past' is no longer a hypothetical future memory but a real decade (or two, or three) of shared life. The ring becomes a commemoration rather than a promise.
Many couples who chose a solitaire for their engagement deliberately choose a three stone ring for a significant anniversary for precisely this reason. TJ Diamond's bespoke service creates three stone anniversary rings with the same materials and craftsmanship as our engagement rings in matching metal, complementary design, or entirely independent style depending on the couple's preference.
Metals for Three Stone Rings
-
Platinum or 18ct white gold — platinum engagement rings: the three diamonds read as a single continuous band of cool, icy brilliance. The most popular metal choice for three stone rings, particularly with round or oval diamonds.
-
18ct yellow gold — creates warm contrast against diamond brilliance. Particularly striking with fancy shapes (oval, pear, emerald) where the warm metal frames the elongated diamond forms. A growing trend in NZ through 2025.
-
18ct rose gold — the most romantic three stone combination. The blush metal reinforces the emotional warmth the past-present-future symbolism already carries.
All TJ Diamond three stone rings are set in solid 18ct gold or platinum no hollow settings, no plating, no compromise on the metal that holds three diamonds for a lifetime.
Natural and Lab-Grown Diamond Options
Three stone rings require three certified diamonds rather than one, which means the natural vs lab-grown choice has a more significant budget impact than for a solitaire. A three stone ring with three natural diamonds of quality grades is a meaningful investment. The same ring with lab-grown diamonds of identical grades is typically 50-70% more affordable making three stone rings with larger, more impressive stones achievable within budgets that would not stretch to equivalent natural stones. Both options are IGI or GIA certified. Explore our lab-grown diamond collection to understand the full range of options.
