Gold Selling FAQs

Selling gold for the first time raises a lot of questions. Here are the answers to every question we hear regularly at TJ Diamond — honest, straightforward, and complete.

Do I need an appointment to sell gold at TJ Diamond?

No. Walk-ins are welcome any time during business hours. There is no waiting list, no booking required, and no need to call ahead. Just bring your gold and we will take care of the rest. The process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes from when you walk in.

How quickly will I be paid?

Same day. If you accept our offer, payment is made immediately — in cash or bank transfer, whichever you prefer. You do not need to come back. You do not wait for a cheque in the mail. You leave with your money.

What ID do I need to bring?

A valid photo ID — a New Zealand driver's licence or passport. ID is required by TJ Diamond for all gold transactions above a minimum threshold. This is standard practice across all reputable gold buyers in New Zealand and exists to protect sellers as well as buyers. If you do not have photo ID, call us before visiting and we can advise.

What if I don't accept the offer?

There is absolutely no obligation. If you do not like the offer, you take your gold home. Nothing changes. We do not charge for the testing, the valuation, or the time. Our offer reflects today's live gold spot price — if the spot price rises later in the week, come back and we will re-test and re-offer.

How is the gold price calculated?

We calculate your offer using three variables: the weight of your gold (in grams, to the nearest 0.01g), the purity of your gold (measured precisely by XRF testing), and today's live international gold spot price. We deduct only for non-gold components — stones, clasps, solder joins, or base metal mounts. We show you the full calculation so you can verify it yourself.

Do you buy broken or damaged jewellery?

Yes. Condition does not affect whether we buy your gold — only purity and weight matter. A broken 18ct gold chain is worth exactly the same per gram as a perfect 18ct chain. Bring everything, regardless of condition.

Is there a minimum amount I can sell?

There is no formal minimum. We will test and weigh any amount of gold. Very small amounts — less than one gram — may not be worth the trip on their own, but if you are combining items, there is no minimum restriction. Even a single gold earring or a small gold charm is worth assessing.

Can I sell gold online or by post?

TJ Diamond is an in-person gold buyer. We do not offer a postal service for gold selling. Sending gold by post introduces risks — loss, theft, and disputes about condition — that we are not comfortable asking our customers to accept. Our valuation is done in front of you, in real time, so you can see exactly how the offer is calculated.
