How to Care for Your Diamond Ring: A Simple Guide

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on earth, but your ring still needs a little care. Lotion, soap and everyday dirt can dull the sparkle, and daily wear slowly works on the prongs that hold your stone.

The good news is that keeping your ring beautiful is simple. Here's how we recommend caring for it at home, and when to bring it in to a jeweler.

How to clean your ring at home

A quick clean once a week keeps your diamond bright. All you need is warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush.

  1. Soak the ring in warm, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  2. Gently brush around the diamond and under the setting, where dirt builds up.
  3. Rinse under warm running water. Close the sink drain first.
  4. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid bleach, chlorine, toothpaste and other harsh cleaners. They can scratch or damage the metal.

When to take your ring off

A few everyday activities are tough on rings. Take yours off when you're:

  • Swimming in a pool or hot tub, since chlorine can weaken gold over time
  • Cleaning with household chemicals
  • Working out or lifting weights, which can bend prongs and scratch metal
  • Gardening, cooking with your hands or doing heavy work
  • Putting on lotion, sunscreen or hair products

A good habit: put your ring on last when you get ready and take it off first.

Keep an eye on the prongs

The prongs are the small metal claws that hold your diamond in place. Everyday knocks can loosen or bend them over time.

Watch for these signs:

  • The diamond moves or clicks when you tap it gently
  • A prong snags on your clothes or hair
  • A prong looks bent, flat or thinner than the others

If you notice any of these, stop wearing the ring and bring it in. Tightening a prong takes minutes; replacing a lost diamond is much harder.

White gold needs re-plating

White gold gets its bright, silvery finish from a thin layer of rhodium. Over time this layer wears away and the warmer gold underneath starts to show. Most white gold rings need re-plating every one to two years, depending on how often they're worn.

Store it safely

Diamonds can scratch other diamonds and gold jewelry. Keep your ring in its own soft pouch or a separate section of your jewelry box. When you take it off away from home, put it straight into a pouch or zipped pocket, never on the edge of a sink.

Book a professional checkup

Even with great care at home, your ring should see a jeweler about every six months. A professional can deep clean it, polish out light scratches and check that every prong is secure.
