How Much Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Ring Cost in NZ? (2026 Guide)

At TJ Gold & Diamond, a lab-grown diamond engagement ring starts from NZD 1,719 for a 0.5 carat stone and NZD 2,234 for 1 carat. These are wholesale prices, direct from the manufacturer, with no retail markup. Only the size of the centre stone changes the price: halo, pavé and three-stone settings, and every metal including platinum, cost the same.

Lab-grown diamonds have changed what Kiwi couples can afford. The same budget that once bought a modest natural diamond can now buy a bigger, brighter, certified stone that is chemically and visually identical.

As an Auckland jewellery manufacturer, we design, cast and set our rings in-house in East Tamaki. This guide breaks down what you can expect to pay in 2026, what drives the price, and how to get the most ring for your money.

Halo, pavé and three-stone settings are the same price as a solitaire, with no extra cost. Every metal is the same price too: 18kt yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.

What Affects the Price of a Lab-Grown Engagement Ring?

The price comes down to the diamond's quality grades, the setting style, the metal, and certification.

Carat weight. Price rises faster than size. A 2 carat stone usually costs well over twice a 1 carat stone of the same quality, because larger rough crystals are harder to grow.

Cut. Cut decides sparkle. An excellent or ideal cut is worth paying for, since a poorly cut diamond looks dull at any size.

Colour and clarity. D–F is the colourless range, the top of the diamond colour scale. In natural diamonds these grades carry a steep premium, but lab-grown makes them affordable, which is why every TJ Gold & Diamond centre stone is D–F colour. Clarity is VVS–VS on every stone too, so inclusions are invisible to the naked eye.

Setting style. A simple solitaire uses the least metal and labour. At most jewellers, halo, pavé and three-stone designs cost more because they add small diamonds and hours of hand-setting. At TJ Gold & Diamond, these settings cost the same as a solitaire.

Metal. Most jewellers charge more for 18kt gold and much more for platinum, the heaviest and rarest option. At TJ Gold & Diamond, 18kt yellow, white and rose gold and platinum are all the same price, so you choose on looks and wear alone. White gold is rhodium plated for its bright finish and needs re-plating every few years; platinum stays naturally white.

Certification. Always ask for an IGI or GIA report. It confirms the stone is lab-grown and verifies its grades, so you know exactly what you are paying for. At TJ Gold & Diamond, every centre stone of 1 carat and above comes with a certificate included. For stones under 1 carat, we can arrange one on request for about NZD 140.

Why Buying Direct From a Manufacturer Costs Less

Most engagement rings pass through several hands before they reach a shop window: a stone supplier, a casting house, a setter, a wholesaler and finally a retailer. Each one adds a margin.

At TJ Gold & Diamond, we handle every step ourselves in our East Tamaki workshop:

  • Design — we draw and 3D-model your ring in-house
  • Casting — we cast the metal ourselves, so you are not paying a third-party foundry
  • Setting and finishing — our jewellers set every stone and polish every ring by hand
  • Stones — we source certified lab-grown diamonds directly, with no wholesale markup

The result is essentially wholesale pricing. You pay what the ring costs to make, without a retailer's markup on top, and you can still customise every detail.

How to Get the Most Ring for Your Budget

  1. Prioritise cut over colour and clarity. With colourless D–F stones as standard, cut is what separates a good diamond from a dazzling one.
  2. Shop just under the round numbers. A 0.95 carat stone looks the same as a 1.00 carat but costs noticeably less.
  3. Consider an elongated shape. Oval, pear and marquise diamonds look larger per carat than round brilliants.
  4. Choose your metal on looks, not price. Every metal is the same price at TJ Gold & Diamond, so platinum is worth considering for its weight and natural white colour.
  5. Pick a setting that flatters the stone. A thin band or hidden halo makes the centre diamond appear bigger.
  6. Go custom with a manufacturer. You pay for the materials and craftsmanship, not a retail chain's overheads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a 1 carat lab-grown diamond ring in NZ? At TJ Gold & Diamond, a complete 1 carat lab-grown engagement ring in 18kt gold starts from NZD 2,234, a wholesale price direct from the manufacturer. Halo, pavé and three-stone settings are included at no extra cost.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds? Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are pure carbon with the same crystal structure, hardness and sparkle as mined diamonds. Only specialist equipment can tell them apart.

Do lab-grown diamonds last forever? Yes. They score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the same as natural diamonds, and will not cloud, fade or lose their sparkle.

Will people be able to tell my diamond is lab-grown? No. A lab-grown diamond is visually identical to a natural one. Many certified stones carry a tiny laser inscription on the girdle, visible only under magnification.

Is a lab-grown diamond a good investment? Lab-grown diamonds have lower resale value than natural diamonds. They are best bought as a ring to wear and enjoy, giving you a larger, higher-quality stone for the same budget.

How long does a custom engagement ring take? At TJ Gold & Diamond, timing depends on the design. We confirm your timeframe at the consultation, before you approve the final design.

Can I see rings in person in Auckland? Yes. You can visit our East Tamaki showroom at 169 Harris Road, Unit B1.
