Marquise Engagement Rings NZ — The Cut Fit for Royalty
The marquise cut is the most dramatically elongating diamond shape available. Its two sharply pointed ends and elongated oval outline create a vertical axis that makes the diamond appear larger than its carat weight and the finger it sits on appear longer and more slender than it is. It is also the diamond cut with the most precisely documented royal origin in jewellery history, commissioned in approximately 1745 at the court of Versailles by Louis XV of France. No other diamond shape was born of a royal command.
At TJ Diamond, every marquise engagement ring is handcrafted in our Auckland studio with V-tip prongs at both pointed ends. If you have not heard this requirement before, the section below explains why it matters before any other consideration in choosing a marquise setting.
The Royal Origin — Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour
The marquise cut's origin is one of the best-documented stories in fine jewellery history. Around 1745, King Louis XV of France commissioned a diamond be cut in the shape of the lips of his mistress, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, who held the title of Marquise de Pompadour. She was one of the most remarkable figures at the Versailles court: a woman of bourgeois origin who became the king's official favourite, his intellectual companion, and one of the most powerful political influences of the period.
The elongated, pointed shape that resulted from the commission took its name from her title. It has been called the marquise cut ever since, and it has carried the association with French royal elegance and aristocratic refinement for nearly three centuries. The cut is also known as the navette, from the French word for a small boat or shuttle, which the outline resembles.
Commissioned by Louis XV of France around 1745. Named for the Marquise de Pompadour. Nearly 280 years later, still the most regal diamond shape in fine jewellery.
Both Tips Need V-Prong Protection — Not Just One
The marquise diamond's two sharply pointed ends are its most structurally vulnerable points. Both tips require V-shaped prongs, called V-tip prongs or chevron prongs, to protect the points from chipping if the ring is struck on a hard surface. This is a requirement that applies to both ends of the marquise, not just one.
This is where the marquise differs from a pear diamond, which has only one pointed tip requiring a V-prong. A marquise has two, and both must be correctly set. Many jewellers who use standard round prongs at the marquise tips leave the points partially exposed. A V-prong cradles the tip edge on both sides, absorbing any impact across the prong rather than allowing it to reach the diamond's pointed corner.
TJ Diamond sets every marquise diamond with V-tip prongs at both ends as standard. Our jewellers inspect both tip protections before the ring leaves our Auckland studio. If you are assessing a marquise setting from any jeweller, confirm that both pointed ends have properly shaped V-prongs rather than standard round prong adaptations.
The Bow-Tie Effect in Marquise Diamonds
Like oval and pear diamonds, the marquise can exhibit a bow-tie effect: a shadow across the widest central section of the stone, caused by light entering the elongated facets and not being returned efficiently to the eye from the stone's centre. In a well-cut marquise, the bow-tie is subtle, adds depth and character, and does not distract from the stone's overall brilliance. In a poorly cut marquise, a prominent dark shadow runs across the centre and significantly reduces the stone's visual appeal.
Assessing the bow-tie effect requires viewing the stone in person under multiple light sources. This is one of the reasons TJ Diamond's try-before-you-pay process is particularly valuable for marquise buyers: you see the exact stone in the exact setting, in our Auckland studio, under the lighting conditions that reveal the bow-tie most accurately. Our jewellers pre-select marquise diamonds for minimal bow-tie effect before bringing them into our workshop.
The Ideal Proportions — Length-to-Width Ratio
The marquise cut's elongated character is determined by its length-to-width ratio, and different buyers prefer different levels of elongation:
Balanced marquise (L-W ratio 1.85 to 2.00): The most widely recommended proportion. Clearly and dramatically elongated, but with enough width to appear substantial rather than fragile. The most versatile marquise proportion for most finger sizes.
Classic elongated marquise (L-W ratio 2.00 to 2.15): A more extreme elongation. Creates a very dramatic, unmistakably bold look on the finger. Particularly striking on longer fingers. Requires careful setting to protect the proportionally more delicate tips.
Wider marquise (L-W ratio below 1.75): A shorter, wider marquise that reads closer to an oval with pointed ends. Less dramatically elongating, but suits buyers who find the classic marquise proportions too narrow for their hand.
North-South or East-West — The Orientation Choice
Traditional marquise rings are set north-south, with the pointed tips running toward the fingertip and knuckle. This orientation maximises the finger-elongating effect and creates the strongest visual axis along the finger.
The east-west marquise, set with the tips pointing to the sides of the finger, is a contemporary and increasingly requested orientation. Where the north-south marquise lengthens the finger vertically, the east-west marquise creates a bold, horizontal statement across the finger. The two pointed tips visible from either side give the ring a distinctive profile unlike any other east-west fancy shape. For buyers who want the marquise's distinctive silhouette with a modern, unconventional character, the east-west setting is a compelling option.
Setting Styles for Marquise Engagement Rings
-
North-south solitaire, solitaire engagement rings: the most classic marquise setting. V-tip prongs at each end, round claws at the curved sides. Minimalist and timelessly elegant. Particularly beautiful in yellow gold, which complements the marquise's regal associations.
-
Halo setting, halo engagement rings: a ring of smaller diamonds follows the marquise outline, amplifying the perceived size and framing the elongated shape. The contrast between the pointed marquise centre and the surrounding halo diamonds creates a visually dramatic combination.
-
Three-stone with pear or trillion sides, three stone engagement rings: a marquise centre flanked by two side stones is a classic and deeply romantic configuration. Pear side stones with the rounded ends facing outward and pointed ends facing the centre create a natural visual flow. Trillion side stones add angular contrast.
-
East-west solitaire: the marquise oriented horizontally across the finger. Bold, architectural, and distinctly contemporary. Both V-tip prongs visible from the side create an unusual and striking profile.
-
Bezel: a metal rim encircles the entire marquise outline, including wrapping around both tips in a protective edge. The most secure option for active wearers and a clean, modern aesthetic.

pear engagement rings collections, which share the elongated character and finger-flattering effect of the marquise with different tip configurations.
Natural and Lab-Grown Marquise Diamonds
Both natural and lab-grown marquise cut diamonds are available at TJ Diamond, each IGI or GIA certified. The marquise's elongated form makes it one of the most efficient fancy shapes for showing carat weight visually, meaning smaller stones read impressively on the hand.
