Customer Testimonials
Here is what Auckland sellers have said about their experience at TJ Diamond. Names and suburbs are shared with permission.
"I inherited a collection of old gold jewellery and had no idea what to do with it. TJ Diamond tested every piece in front of me, explained exactly what each one was worth, and paid me the same day in cash. No pressure, no drama. I wish I'd come sooner."
— Sarah M. — Remuera
"Came in with a broken gold chain and some old rings. The XRF testing was fascinating — they showed me the readout on every piece. The offer was significantly higher than what a pawn shop in the city had quoted me. Took about 12 minutes from walking in to walking out with cash."
— James K. — Takapuna
"I was nervous selling Mum's old jewellery — it felt like a big decision. The team was incredibly respectful and took their time explaining everything. They didn't rush me, the offer was fair, and I felt comfortable the whole time. Would not hesitate to recommend."
— Linda T. — Ponsonby
"Sold a gold sovereign and two rings. They paid 20% more than another local buyer had quoted. The testing process is completely transparent — you see exactly what the machine reads. I'll be bringing in the rest of my collection next month."
— Michael R. — Howick
"Fantastic experience. Walk-in, no wait, tested everything in front of me, clear offer, bank transfer within the hour. That's exactly how a gold sale should work. Thank you TJ Diamond."
— Aroha N. — Henderson
"Third time selling gold here. Always the fairest offer I've found in Auckland. The consistency is what keeps me coming back — same process, same transparency, same result every time."
— David C. — Grey Lynn

If you have ever sold gold before — or researched where to sell — you have probably noticed that different gold buyers offer very different prices for the same item. The difference can be significant. Here is why that happens, and why TJ Diamond consistently pays more than most Auckland alternatives.
Most Gold Buyers Resell at a Margin — We Use the Gold
The typical gold buying business model works like this: buy gold from sellers at a discounted price, then sell it on to a refinery or wholesale dealer at a higher price. The margin between what they pay you and what they receive from the refinery is their profit.
TJ Diamond's model is different. We are an Auckland jewellery manufacturer. We use gold we purchase from sellers directly in our own jewellery production — engagement rings, wedding bands, and fine jewellery made in our Auckland studio. This means:
We pay closer to the spot price because we are using the gold ourselves, not reselling it.
We do not need a middleman margin.
The gold we buy goes directly into rings made in our Auckland workshop — not into a refinery pipeline.
Lower Overheads Than Chain Gold Buyers
Cash-for-gold chains and pawn shops typically operate with high overhead costs — large retail premises in high-traffic locations, large staff numbers, and franchise fees. These overheads have to be paid for somewhere. They come out of what they pay you for your gold.
TJ Diamond operates from a focused Auckland studio with low overhead relative to our buying volume. We do not pay shopping mall rents or franchise fees. That saving is passed directly to you in the form of a better price per gram.
Transparent Pricing — You See Every Number
Some gold buyers offer a single number with no explanation. "We'll give you $X for that." That number could be 50% of spot price or 80% of spot price — you have no way of knowing unless you calculate it yourself.
At TJ Diamond, we show you every number: the weight, the purity from the XRF test, the spot price we are using, and the calculation. You can verify every figure independently. There is no guesswork and no mystery pricing.

Selling gold for the first time raises a lot of questions. Here are the answers to every question we hear regularly at TJ Diamond — honest, straightforward, and complete.
Do I need an appointment to sell gold at TJ Diamond?
No. Walk-ins are welcome any time during business hours. There is no waiting list, no booking required, and no need to call ahead. Just bring your gold and we will take care of the rest. The process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes from when you walk in.
How quickly will I be paid?
Same day. If you accept our offer, payment is made immediately — in cash or bank transfer, whichever you prefer. You do not need to come back. You do not wait for a cheque in the mail. You leave with your money.
What ID do I need to bring?
A valid photo ID — a New Zealand driver's licence or passport. ID is required by TJ Diamond for all gold transactions above a minimum threshold. This is standard practice across all reputable gold buyers in New Zealand and exists to protect sellers as well as buyers. If you do not have photo ID, call us before visiting and we can advise.
What if I don't accept the offer?
There is absolutely no obligation. If you do not like the offer, you take your gold home. Nothing changes. We do not charge for the testing, the valuation, or the time. Our offer reflects today's live gold spot price — if the spot price rises later in the week, come back and we will re-test and re-offer.
How is the gold price calculated?
We calculate your offer using three variables: the weight of your gold (in grams, to the nearest 0.01g), the purity of your gold (measured precisely by XRF testing), and today's live international gold spot price. We deduct only for non-gold components — stones, clasps, solder joins, or base metal mounts. We show you the full calculation so you can verify it yourself.
Do you buy broken or damaged jewellery?
Yes. Condition does not affect whether we buy your gold — only purity and weight matter. A broken 18ct gold chain is worth exactly the same per gram as a perfect 18ct chain. Bring everything, regardless of condition.
Is there a minimum amount I can sell?
There is no formal minimum. We will test and weigh any amount of gold. Very small amounts — less than one gram — may not be worth the trip on their own, but if you are combining items, there is no minimum restriction. Even a single gold earring or a small gold charm is worth assessing.
Can I sell gold online or by post?
TJ Diamond is an in-person gold buyer. We do not offer a postal service for gold selling. Sending gold by post introduces risks — loss, theft, and disputes about condition — that we are not comfortable asking our customers to accept. Our valuation is done in front of you, in real time, so you can see exactly how the offer is calculated.

When you bring your gold to TJ Diamond, the first thing we do is test it. Every piece, every time — no exceptions. We use XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technology, and we do it in front of you, so you can see exactly what we find.
There are no surprises, no back-room assessments, and no acid testing that scratches or damages your jewellery. You watch. You see the result. You get an offer based on what the test actually shows.
What Is XRF Testing?
XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence. It is the same technology used by government assay offices, customs agencies, and professional gemological labs worldwide to determine the precise metal content of any alloy.
The XRF machine directs a small beam of X-rays at the surface of your gold. The atoms in the gold absorb and then re-emit energy at specific wavelengths — each element emits at a unique wavelength. The machine reads those wavelengths and calculates the exact percentage of each metal present in the alloy.
The result: a precise readout of your gold's purity — 37.5% for 9ct, 75% for 18ct, 99.9% for 24ct — in under 60 seconds.
Why XRF Is Better Than Acid Testing
Acid testing was the traditional method for checking gold purity. It involves scratching the item against a test stone and applying acid to the resulting mark to observe the reaction. Acid testing is:
Destructive — it scratches the surface of your jewellery.
Less precise — it identifies a general karat range, not an exact purity percentage.
Slower — each test takes several minutes.
Subjective — the result depends on the operator's interpretation of the acid reaction colour.
XRF is none of these things. It is non-destructive, precise to two decimal places, fast, and completely objective — the machine gives the same result every time for the same piece.
The TJ Diamond Testing Process — Step by Step
You bring your gold to our Auckland studio. No appointment needed.
We place each piece into the XRF machine, one at a time, in front of you.
The test runs for 15 to 60 seconds depending on the piece.
The machine displays the exact purity of the gold — the percentage of gold and all other metals present.
We weigh the piece on our certified precision scales — to the nearest 0.01 gram.
We calculate your offer: weight × gold percentage × today's spot price, minus deductions for any non-gold components.
We show you the full calculation and present you with a clear offer. No hidden numbers.
What XRF Can and Cannot Tell Us
XRF tells us: the exact gold purity, the presence of other metals (silver, copper, palladium, rhodium, nickel), whether the piece is solid gold or plated.
XRF cannot tell us: the internal structure of hollow pieces. For hollow items, we assess volume and wall thickness to estimate actual gold weight.
Gold-plated items: XRF identifies plating immediately. A gold-plated piece typically reads a thin gold surface layer over a base metal. These items cannot be purchased as gold — the gold content is negligible.
All XRF testing at TJ Diamond is free and carries no obligation to sell. If you bring your gold and don't like the offer, you take your gold home. The testing changes nothing — it simply tells us both what we are working with.

Selling gold for the first time can feel uncertain. How do you know you're getting a fair price? Who can you trust? What happens when you walk in?
This guide answers every question. At TJ Diamond, we believe transparency is everything — so here is exactly what to expect when you sell your gold with us.
Step 1 — Gather Your Gold
Collect everything you want to sell. This includes old jewellery you no longer wear, broken or damaged pieces, inherited gold, gold coins, and any scrap gold. You do not need to clean or repair anything — we assess gold as-is.
Step 2 — Visit Our Auckland Studio
No appointment is needed. Walk in any time during business hours. Bring your gold and a form of photo ID (driver's licence or passport). ID is required for all gold purchases above a certain value — this is standard practice across all reputable gold buyers in New Zealand.
Step 3 — Free Testing and Weighing
We weigh your gold on certified precision scales and test its purity using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technology. This process is fast, non-destructive, and done in front of you. No acid. No scratching. No damage to your items.
Step 4 — Receive Your Offer
Based on the weight, purity, and today's live gold spot price, we calculate your offer and present it to you clearly. We show you exactly how we arrived at the figure. No hidden deductions. No pressure.
Step 5 — Get Paid
If you accept the offer, we pay you immediately — in cash or bank transfer, whichever you prefer. The entire process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Tips for Getting the Best Price
• Sell when the gold spot price is high — check the live price before you visit
• Bring everything — even broken or incomplete pieces have value
• Avoid pawn shops — they typically pay 40–60% of gold's value; we pay significantly more
• Don't clean your gold — it won't change the price and could damage delicate pieces
• Get multiple quotes if you're unsure — then compare them against ours
