The Cleft Depth — The Detail That Makes a Heart Unmistakable

The cleft is the central indentation at the top of the heart, between the two lobes. Its depth determines whether the heart reads clearly as a heart or blurs into a rounded or teardrop shape. A cleft too shallow — the heart reads as a rounded oval with soft shoulders. A cleft too deep — the bridge at the top between the lobe bases becomes structurally fragile and the lobes appear over-defined and heavy.

The ideal cleft reaches to approximately the midpoint of the heart's length from the top, creating a confident, clean notch that identifies the shape unmistakably from any viewing distance. Cleft depth does not appear on any diamond certificate. It is assessed visually, at the same time as wing symmetry. The 0.50ct Minimum — When a Heart Reads as a Heart

This is the practical guidance most NZ heart diamond ring buyers are not given. A heart cut diamond below 0.50 carats loses its shape definition in normal wear. The two lobes, the central cleft, and the pointed tip — the three features that make a heart unmistakably a heart — require sufficient face-up area to be legible in the ring setting. Below 0.50 carats, the cleft becomes too small to read clearly, and the stone reads as a rounded shape rather than a heart.

A minimum of 0.50 carats is recommended for any heart diamond ring regardless of occasion. At 1.00 carat and above, the heart outline makes an unmistakable statement that is visible at any viewing distance.

The V-Tip Prong — Required for Every Heart Ring

The pointed tip at the bottom of the heart is the shape's most structurally vulnerable point, and it requires a V-shaped prong regardless of the ring style, occasion, or metal. A V-prong cradles the tip corner on both sides, protecting it from chipping if the ring receives an accidental impact at the point. A standard round prong leaves the tip partially exposed. Point-Up or Point-Down?

Point-down (most common): The pointed tip faces toward the palm. The two lobes are visible at the top of the finger. The orientation that most clearly reads as a heart to others viewing the ring — the shape matches the direction of a conventionally drawn heart.

Point-up: The pointed tip faces toward the fingernail. The lobes sit at the base of the setting. Less common but preferred by some wearers. Still reads clearly as a heart in the setting, particularly in a bezel or halo where the outline is reinforced by the setting frame.
